Quarter Sawn Brown Oak Bowl Blank
Part of our Super Premium Collection
Brown Oak is not a distinct species but is instead a result of the tree having been infected with a fungus whilst still alive which darkens the wood and makes it rarer than plain Oak. Quarter sawn refers to the way the timber is sawn at the sawmill. The growth rings run across the thickness of the boards instead of along the width. This generally results in pretty medullary rays which are the impressive flecks which can be seen in the photos.
The combination of being Brown Oak and quarter sawn is therefore reasonably rare and makes for a beautiful blank.
