spalted sweet chestnut wood turning bowl blanks

Streaky Sweet Chestnut Bowl Blanks

These Steaky Sweet Chestnut bowl blanks are very rare. They come from a huge wind blown tree that lay undisturbed for many years in the grounds of National Trust Knightshayes until the head ranger decided it needed to be removed and offered it to English Woods.

The timber is brown with age and was in the very early stages of decay when it was milled. The resulting streaky character is extremely striking, and offers the opportunity to make some very special 'head turner' pieces.

The streaky grain pattern is different in every piece and that's what makes each one of these blanks a joy to work on. We ensure every piece has some interesting figuring.

  • Centre marked - quicker set up & less waste
  • Planed on both faces - less waste, quick & easy to mount on the lathe
  • All blanks labelled with their species
  • Wax sealed edges - stable & ready to store if required
  • Fully seasoned/Air dried - less stressed than kiln dried & easier to turn
  • Carefully selected - always good quality

Thickness: 50mm(2") and 75mm (3")

Diameters: 105mm (4") to 455mm (18")

We have photographed a selection of blanks to give an indication of the likely level and types of figuring within the blanks on offer. The pictures show representative samples. Blanks supplied will differ.
